Can anyone guarantee two atomic clocks are perfectly synchronized when measuring light & radio sygnal delays?


In relativistic physics, radio signals and light bend due to interactions with plasma (for example, when they cross the vicinity of the Sun). But how can anyone guarantee that two atomic clocks, placed in distant locations, used for measuring time delays caused by geometrical differences between the extremities of bent trayectories, are synchronized with each other accurately enough?

They're not bent dues to interaction with plasma, they are bent due to the gravitational effect of SO MUCH plasma.

The only way to assure it is to know exactly how long it takes a signal to get to the other clock and back, then when you query it as to it's exact time, you can subtract that time from any difference that shows up.

    Nice job, but wouldn’t it have been cheaper, easier, and more practical/accurate to sync up with an atomic clock? I seem to recall HaD running a simple project that used one of the atomic clock radios; the module only cost something like $10 and was exceptionally easy to interface with.Bonus points for style using GPS, but certainly a downside to this build is that it won’t work unless near a window with a clear view of the sky.

    Indeed, Al. That’s why I said how not to do tech support. The point I made in the article is that a lot of technology is simply too obtusely constructed for ordinary people to grasp, and looking down on ordinary people for not being able to do things they consider “easy” is a common geek failing.
