How do household atomic clocks work?


I know household atomic clocks sync with a real atomic clock somewhere, but how does it work? Is there a radio signal broadcasted? Do you have to sync it with a home computer?

Nothing to do with a PC.

There is a radio station in Colorado that broadcasts a standard time signal that can be picked up in most of the US.

The clock receives that radio signal and synchronizes to it.

Can't get it in New England, however.

How do I get my computer to synch up with my atomic clock?


I have a radio controlled atomic clock, which is supposed to be as accurate as you can get, when it comes to time. I have two computers, and one of them is the same time as the clock, but the other one is always 2 minutes & 25 seconds off! This wouldn't be a big deal, but I work at a job where things have to happen every hour on the hour, and I'm constantly having to reset the clock on the computer, to match the atomic clock, so that the computer will start on time automatically. Any suggestions?

windows 2000/XP has the option to sync your time to an internet server but i don't think that will work so well, maybe if your computers are part of a domain controller then they're time will always be exactly the same.

to enable internet time double click on the time in of the startmenu task bar. click the tab INTERNET TIME and check the box AUTOMATICALLY SYNCRONIZ WITH AN INTERNETTIME SERVER.

see if that works otherwise try nettime although it is outdated.

    I have an ihome and even though it is an older model it will definitely wake you up because when the alarm goes off it beeps and the longer you wait to to turn it off the beeping gets faster and constantly beeps till you turn it off or you can set the volume really loud and set it so you iPod is your alarm so when your alarm goes off it will blast one of your songs really loud waking you up

    so-called atomic clocks actually run from an internal crystal timer. they incorporate a 60 KHz receiver that tunes a radio data signal broadcast from Ft Collins Colorado. The clock uses the data signal to correct its internal time keeping, so that it will stay in step with the reference. Because the data is digital, it can send info on leap seconds, savings time changes, UTC hour, day and year.

    the only jamming you might be able to accomplish is to cause enough interference to block reception, but that usually is done only once a day, late at night when school is closed. When the clock misses an automatic update, it displays an error flag.

    the old fashioned "IBM" school clocks were made to synchronize to the central controller, usually in the principals office. if you could trick the controller, all the school clocks would change in step.

    Nice job, but wouldn’t it have been cheaper, easier, and more practical/accurate to sync up with an atomic clock? I seem to recall HaD running a simple project that used one of the atomic clock radios; the module only cost something like $10 and was exceptionally easy to interface with.

    What a fantastic timepiece. I got another eco-drive from my wife at Christmas, and she said I could exchange it if I prefered another design. I just loved the look of the Skyhawk, the orange, black and silver is striking. So I swapped it and happy that the new one has the atomic clock function, the full 200M rating as well as the crystal front. I would have gone for the lighter titanium version but slightly out of my price range. Highly recommended. The atomic clock function works well all over BC Canada, and I even get a lock on pointing out from my bedroom window in Langley.

    How could have bought something from Target and not know what brand you bought or an instruction manuel. I take it back to Target and get a different one that has an instruction manuel to it.
