Some questions about atomic clocks?


1) How does an atomic clock work?
2) In the famous time dilation experiment where atomic clocks were used, how many times was the experiment performed?
3) If two atomic clocks were set side-by-side and synchronized, is it possible that one of them may still be "slower" by billionths of a second?

1. In short, you take an atom of some type, place it in a small area such that it doesn't move, subject it to a constant energy source -- say microwaves or visible light -- and then measure the change in electric field as the nucleus vibrates back and forth. Better explaination is in the link.

2. Countless. Communication, GSP, and other satelites now look at their atomic clocks routinely to avoid time dilation due to their relative velocities. It is now just done as a matter of course, likely happening several times per minute based on the number of GSP satelites in orbit.

3. Cesium atomic clocks are rated at about one second per million years. Hydrogen clocks are about ten times as accurate in periods of less than a week. In addition, both clocks would slow down by nearly the same amount. A billionth of a second would take about a month for either go be off by.

    It depends on when it was manufactured. Get the 1st 4 numbers of the Serial Number on the bottom of the clock. If it is 0608 or higher, it will reset itself. If not then you will have to reset it. Got to emersonradio.com and click on 'Contact Us'. An option will appear in the middle of the screen for 'Important Daylight Savings Time' which will give you the instructions you need. It also gives a hotline to call for assistance – 800-526-7521. I hope this helps. I'm resetting mine right now.
