Two year old product component breaks but product discontinued?

Expensive atomic clock with a transmitter to give outside temp, humidity and pressure readings. Transmitter is broken and is just around 2 years old. Can't seem to find warranty. Went to the company website and product was discontinued. Emailed them seeing if replacements available or repair possible and given a rude response that I am out of luck and I am stuck with a very expensive clock. Do I have any options at this point?

you are pretty much S O L.

You could try to find someone that will try to repair it, but getting service data would be virtually impossible. MAYBE the FCC might have some info on the fcc.gov web site if you have the fcc id info.

The cost to have someone put time in repairing would exceed the value.

I will assume tha you have done all you can about rebooting the system.

Pull the batteries on the remote and the base unit.
allow at lease 1 maybe more HOURS to fully discharge any capacitance in the power supplies.
put the batteries in the remote first, allow it to "settle" and start transmitting.

put the batteries in the clock.

The clock has two receivers, a 60kHz receiver for the WWVB clock data and a 400MHz receiver for the remote.

You MIGHT have something on the same channel on the 400MHz RX. I will also assume that you do not have anything that actually receive that band, a scanner, a neighbor that has a scanner, or know a ham radio operator that has UHF capabilites.

No, the difference in the two time standards is due to the cumulative slowing. If the slowing ceased, we would still need to add those leap seconds regularly. It's like having a clock that's slow – if it loses five minutes a day, it can continue to do so indefinitely. By some innumerate arguments, you would expect it to slow to a dead stop in less than a year. The first number stated is the actual rate of slowing – 0.002 seconds per day per century. That's about 0.0036 seconds per year, not 0.7. That's a long-term average for the current era. It is in fact faster now than it was in the distant past because the ocean tides are close to resonance and are therefore absorbing more energy. There are also a variety of factors that can speed or slow the Earth's rotation in the short term, so the slowing is not constant.

As for your second question, about the leap seconds, I have seen some very confused arguments from people who think that if we need to add a leap second every other year, that the length of the year (or maybe even the *day*) is increasing by that amount every year, from which they linearly extrapolate a time when the rotation rate will go to zero.

The temperature readings are from internal electronics. Most clocks like that will give internal temps; some have the added feature of external (usually wireless) sensors for outside temps.

The "weather forecasts" are just based on the local barometric pressure and aren't particularly accurate. For instance, rising pressure = sunny, but that could also indicate a front moving through and some rain, or falling pressure = rain, but that could mean the front is passed and the skies are clearing.

Umm — transmit? They are designed to receive the US atomic clock broadcasts on shortwave (5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz from Ft. Collins, CO or Hawaii) and interpret the signals to reprogram the clock to the correct time once a day (usually 1 to 4 AM local time).

You may find that the one with weather also has a relative humidity sensor. If that would be useful where you live, then it might be a reason to choose it over the other.

A note to your note, time is based on vibrations of the Cesium atom which is what is used to calibrated the atomic clock … and speed, more specifically velocity is defined to be distance divided by the time it takes to cover that distance.

Hey Will,Yeah I know your dark at me actually 'winning' some stuff..The wireless mouse is going well and I've also hooked up the thermonuclear projection clock – its atomic clock will sync the time with the base station as long as I'm within 150 km of Frankfurt.Quality not quantity mate… :)

1997 Gallup Poll shows that 95% of U.S. scientists accept evolution and not creationism (and the U.S. has more creationists than any industrialized nation in the world). How many is “many scientists”?
Not that it really matters though, because you need evidence for your claims. There are over 240,000 peer reviewed studies related to evolution and its evidence. All of them lies, you say, but how many have you read?
