atomic travel clocks

Did they prove with the use of atomic clocks that it's possible to have space travel?
I remember talking in Biology class a few years ago about this scientific study that put an atomic clock on Earth's ground and one at the top of a very tall building. Apparently over a long time the two clocks became slightly off (milliseconds) because the one at the top of the building had a larger circumfrence to travel than the one on the ground and thus moved faster than the one on the ground to keep up.
Then the conversation moved to the possibility that if we were to travel in space for a long time and went ridiculously fast (faster than we can now) we could travel for say twenty earth years but upon returning seem only maybe ten years older than when one left. This isn't exactly "space travel" but along those lines. Can anyone confirm this rant of mine or offer any other info I'm terribly interested...
There have been several experiments with atomic clocks that prove one important part of Einstein's Theory of Relativity.
These theories and experiments led to the "thought experiment" that became known as the Twin Paradox.
If you have two people, born as Twins. Send one on a 20 year long journey into space at a high fraction of the speed of light (well over 90%) and the other twin remains at home... When the Twin who made the space journey returns home, he'll have aged only a small fraction of the time his Twin aged at home...
Here's a fun way to visualize it, provided by the PBS TV Science show called NOVA:
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/einstein/hotsciencetwin/
If you set the speed at 99.99% and choose Rigel as the destination, the space traveling twin will age 25 years while the one at home would age 1800 years (if he could live that long
)
Have Fun!

My misapprehension of the Twin's paradox.?
I have difficulty in understanding why a twin who leaves our planet and accelerates to something close to the speed of light will appear younger years later than his or her twin upon return.
In both frames, that of the earth bound twin and that of the travelling twin, there is a relative speed difference that is very great, and I understand somewhat the mechanisms of time dilation. But many argue that the travelling twin undergoes acceleration on the journey so his or her frame of reference is non-inertial.
I would argue that during this period of non-inertial-ness that the earth bound twin will also have a non-inertial reference frame while the travelling twin is accelerating?
So where's the beef?
I know that experiments on earth have confirmed the twin's paradox using atomic clocks and jet aircraft, but I fail to see why this happens?
Einstein introduced the twins paradox at the end of a lecture on special relativity before he had developed any general relativity. I believe it was intended as a joke and a test. If the audience had been listening carefully, they would have gotten the joke and brought the house down with laughter. Unfortunately, that hasn't happened to this day. The point of the joke is that the lecture was about situations in which there is no gravity and no acceleration; you can't go somewhere and return without accelerating; ha, ha, ha!
Once Einstein had developed general relativity, it became clear that time passes more slowly for the accelerated twin, but not for the stationary twin. In the traveling twin's coordinates while he is accelerating away from Earth, time at the destination races ahead and the destination gets closer (many times faster than the speed of light if it is very far away) because of the contraction of space. When he decelerates at the destination, he perceives that Earth clocks are racing ahead while the distance to Earth is increasing many times faster than light. The speed limit of c applies only to objects passing one another, not to the time rate of change of distance for very distant objects.

I never thought of an atomic travel clock as being “retro” but I guess travel clocks in general are retro now, since anyone who has a cellphone has a built-in alarm in their phone, and phone time is very accurate. I did go ahead and get an atomic travel clock for my bathroom after reading this post, and I like it quite well so far…no worries about the clock being slow or fast, so when I hop in the shower before work, I know exactly how much time I have to get ready!
