Clock Led How much power is wasted on the LED clock on a microwave oven in a year? Gas Oven? (in the US) Thanks.?
I had seen somewhere on the web that the typical use of a microwave oven would use more power for the LED clock in 10 years time then cooking. Looking to learn more.
After reading your question, I used my "Kill-A-Watt" meter and measured the consumption of my microwave oven.
The base load of the microwave is 2 watts. This number did not fluctuate based on the LED display. This is basically the power consumption of the electronic controls.
2 watts x 24 hours x 365 days x 10 years = 175,200 watt-hours or 175 kWh.
When operating at 100% power, my microwave oven draws 1750 watts. (1.75 kW) A bag of microwave popcorn takes about 3-minutes or 1/20th of an hour. (0.05 hours)
1.75 kW x 0.05 hours = 0.0875 kWh
Microwave frozen dinners take a bit longer, but boiling a cup of water for instant coffee or tea takes less time. I will assume that the average microwave "event" takes 3 minutes or the 0.0875 kWh.
If we assume a average of three microwave events per day, in one year this amounts to:
0.0875 kWh per event x 3 events x 365 days = 96 kWh.
Actually 2-watts is pretty low. Other applicances such as VCR's and TV's generally draw much more when they are turned off.
P.S. No, I don't have a supercharged microwave oven. It is rated 1200 watts, but that is the output used to heat the food. The actual power consumption from the electric utility is 1750 watts at full power. (measured with the Kill-A-Watt)

Hi unfitting, yes…it was weird how visually I thought it was plush but I think it was just how the ridges were so closely and yet not deeply placed in the wood?
Or maybe I'm just insane. Do you remember my “Tactile Post?” How I just can't resist “touching things?” It was related to fabric, actually–and when it was worn on people!!! I also think there is an ADD impulsivity to it–or just some impulsivity in general?
You made me laugh about “other toys!” Well, they can be fun too, right? *PA winks*
Yes, I know those birds. I had so many desk toys at my last job. Well, I still have them–they're now just at home.
Before I was laid off, I was actually going to write a post about all of them. I suppose I still could? Some of them were purely hilarious!
I don't know if watching the bird on end would make you ADD. Just enjoying something and becoming transfixed? Some people on the Autistic Spectrum “stim” due to the Disorder. Again, remember, it is a Spectrum so there can be great variance. There also is a great comorbidity ratio. As a result, they have “stim toys.”
Once around Christmas (even though my ex-partner is Jewish–or was it a very rare time when the calendars coincided when Hannukah fell around the Christmas season) we were in one of these kistchy shops.
Now, I am not on the Spectrum but with my ADD and other things…well, I sometimes can…arguably…but not enough to be dx'd get a bit stimmy. We saw this WICKED clock that was LED, had all of these shiny objects, shiny objects…
NOTE: big with stim toys in a lot of cases.
The shiny objects? Fibre Optic wires/cables that did all of this…”stuff!” And you could program the clock, LED display but no…the Fibre Optic wires were what was best. They stuck all out of it like a bad hair day!
I begged and begged for it but ex-partner said, “No way! You'd never leave the house!”
And by the way. I'm really glad I checked my sidebar. Your comment never made it into my Inbox!

About Me
Hi, JT here. I recently received a Projection Alarm Clock as a gift and thought that it was just the coolest thing ever. I've started giving them to friends and thought I'd do a little research and put a site together about Projection Clocks and Atomic Clocks. I hope you enjoy!

One of the segments in the LED display on my projection clock is dead. How does that even happen? Aren't those good for ages?
Yes
