How can I sync my computer's time with the precise time?

I've been surfing around the internet looking for something free and simple that will syncronize my computer's time with the atomic clock and I haven't really found anything that seems immediately worthwhile. A lot of downloads cost some money and the free ones are a little questionable as to if they'll do what I want them to. Also, I don't need all of the extra junk they put with it like being able to find out what time it is on the other side of the world in Bangalore... I just need something simple, a quick sync to make sure my computer is on time!

So anyone have any good suggestions that won't give me any viruses or have me reaching for my purse? Thank you!

Go to control Panel
Click to open Date and Time.

Click the Internet Time tab, and then click Change settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Select the check box next to Synchronize with an Internet time server, select a time server, and then click OK.

Salient stuff from > “The time stamp counter has, until recently, been an excellent high-resolution, low-overhead way of getting CPU timing information. With the advent of multi-core/hyperthreaded CPUs, systems with multiple CPUs, and “hibernating” operating systems, the TSC cannot be relied on to provide accurate results – unless great care is taken to correct the possible flaws: rate of tick and whether all cores (processors) have identical values in their time-keeping registers. There is no promise that the timestamp counters of multiple CPUs on a single motherboard will be synchronized. In such cases, programmers can only get reliable results by locking their code to a single CPU. Even then, the CPU speed may change due to power-saving measures taken by the OS or BIOS, or the system may be hibernated and later resumed (resetting the time stamp counter). In those latter cases, to stay relevant, the counter must be recalibrated periodically (according to the time resolution your application requires).” **Nerd-addendum:** Outside of the built-in clock setup you get on your computer, the OS also uses Network Time Protocol (NTP) if it has access to the Internet. This system allows an internet-based time server to update your PC and keep the clock accurate to world time. Those time servers are arranged in a hierarchy (each layer being called a *stratum*). Stratum 0 (the root or most authoritative source of time) is usually an atomic clock. Many educational, government and large institutions maintain [atomic as reliable sources of time, and allow access to this resource via the Internet. GPS satellites also contain atomic clocks, and time receivers are available to snag this reliable time out of the air and feed it into a computer network, too. **hyper-nerd-addendum:**GPS itself actually works by reading the time from 3 or more GPS satellites, then using that to gauge your distance from them, and via your position in 3d space.

The temperature readings are from internal electronics. Most clocks like that will give internal temps; some have the added feature of external (usually wireless) sensors for outside temps.

The "weather forecasts" are just based on the local barometric pressure and aren't particularly accurate. For instance, rising pressure = sunny, but that could also indicate a front moving through and some rain, or falling pressure = rain, but that could mean the front is passed and the skies are clearing.

Umm — transmit? They are designed to receive the US atomic clock broadcasts on shortwave (5, 10, 15, and 20 MHz from Ft. Collins, CO or Hawaii) and interpret the signals to reprogram the clock to the correct time once a day (usually 1 to 4 AM local time).

You may find that the one with weather also has a relative humidity sensor. If that would be useful where you live, then it might be a reason to choose it over the other.

It depends on when it was manufactured. Get the 1st 4 numbers of the Serial Number on the bottom of the clock. If it is 0608 or higher, it will reset itself. If not then you will have to reset it. Got to emersonradio.com and click on 'Contact Us'. An option will appear in the middle of the screen for 'Important Daylight Savings Time' which will give you the instructions you need. It also gives a hotline to call for assistance – 800-526-7521. I hope this helps. I'm resetting mine right now.

Phil. (12:16:16): But we keep adding leap seconds because the Earth’s rotation is slowing down not speeding up.
Not true Phil. It means the 'day' as measured by rotation of the earth is slower than the atomic clock, but is less slow since the late 90s. As I originally posted above: “From 1972 thru 1998 (26 years) 21 leap seconds were added. From 1999 to the present (9 years) only 1 leap second has been added.”, and as Fernando posted, one other was added at the end of 2008. So, in 11 years we added 2 seconds vs. 26 years and 21 seconds. Were all things equal, in those 11 years we should have added 8, not 2 seconds. That's an increase in rotation.

I wouldn't classify us as “exhausted” after this weekend, more like “duh.” Brooke and I got up earlier than usual, took our time getting ready and messing around on the computer, and then got to SSCC 30 minutes early at 10:30, or so we thought. After waiting around for a few minutes outside waiting for the “shift change,” Fred came out and helped us realize that we were victims of the Atomic Clock Snafu, as I will now call it.

The folks that control the automatic clocks apparently overlooked the shift in date for the time change and we placed all our trust in our clock. Oops.

I was really disappointed that we missed church. It kinda through off my whole rhythm.
