   Have you ever actually used a voice command system?
   It's a great idea, but the technology to do it effectively is still lacking.

   I was in for 5 1/2 days, so a relatively short stay compared to 3-4 weeks. Some suggestions: * Earplugs. I was in a standard ward room with 3 roommates. In addition to them (and their visitors), there’s other random hospital noise that sometimes you just don’t want to hear. * Small clock. I wasn’t wearing my contact lenses and without my glasses I can’t see shit. But I could reach one of those small travel alarm clocks to see what time it was. (So you can watch the hours drag by…) An iPhone/iPod/whatever can do the same thing, but I didn’t take anything with me of any real value. (Who’s going to steal a travel alarm clock?) * They told me to bring a robe, and fortunately the one I brought was pretty thin. It always seemed so damn hot in the room. If he doesn’t have a good robe already, that’s an idea. * I took books/magazines, but honestly for most of the time I was so drugged up, I couldn’t focus on anything anyway. Recovery is pretty tiring! * Not sure if all hospitals offer it, but in my pre-hospital visit I mentioned a skin condition and they offered special sheets. They’re not as crunchy/starchy as the regular sheets. They might feel nicer, especially after prolonged exposure. * The one thing I wish I’d had was someone to spend more time with me. The nurse would help me out of bed and sit me in a chair and then leave me there, where I couldn’t reach the call button and couldn’t get back to bed by myself. Grr. One of my roommates had a nephew who stayed for hours on end, and he ended up helping me, too. So if you (or someone else) can go for a half a day or a day, that’s awesome. Tell your friend you don’t expect him to entertain you and that he should feel free to sleep or do whatever. But when he needs help, you can probably do some of the things he might otherwise have to wait for. (Pass or fill up a water glass, adjust pillows/blankets, etc.) When my Mom had her knee replacement surgery, I spent the week with her and kept track of things like when she took medications, when physio came, and any questions for her doctor (such as, “should this catheter bag really be red?”). Just keep an eye out for him. The nurses are busy, and your friend is busy healing.

   I have a really old travel alarm clock and it kinda screeches more than beeps anymore.
